Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police’s Central Zone police launched the all women Patrol Squads, ‘Women On Wheels’ with newly recruited women police constables at People’s Plaza in Necklace Road here on Wednesday. The concept was introduced to focus on curbing incidents of sexual harassment and to ensure women’s safety. The initiative was launched by the City Police on Monday and on Wednesday, the Central Zone police introduced the squads in their limitsThe aim is to involve women personnel in patrolling duties to prevent crime, engage them for community policing and emergency duties as well. The idea is to integrate them with the Blue Colts.

On Monday, Shikha Goel, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes), had said that these women cops would patrol the streets during the general shift (day time) and reach out to victims in distress. Till now, women personnel were confined to police stations to attend to complaints or were drafted for bandobast arrangements for rallies, protests and public gathering.

As part of the preparations for launching the women patrol teams, newly recruited women constables were trained over the last two months in driving, unarmed combat techniques and other techniques. The objective is to have the women do all duties men do at the police station level.

As for fields like maintenance of law and order, traffic, VIP security, investigation and technical investigation or IT initiatives, in which women need to acquire specialisation, separate and specialised training modules would be introduced.

Officials said for now, every division would have one team to patrol the jurisdiction and attend to calls. As the numbers increase, it would be extended to the police station level.
